Sociological Imagination My High School Gpa - 989 Words

Sociological imagination is looking at a situation from a different point of view. My high school GPA was a 3.345 and my ACT score was a 27. Looking at these scores compared to my class, I did very poorly. When this case is analyzed individually, it looks as though I was lazy and did not work hard in high school. But when the sociological imagination perspective is applied, it shows that during junior year larger forces such as my 22-year-old sister running away from home, my father being laid off, and my grandmother’s heart attack caused my focus to be turned away from my studies and I preformed poorly in my Advanced Placement classes. Throughout high school, my dream was to attend the University of Michigan, but with these forces against me I failed and did not receive admission. Although my experience was rather dramatic, other students had different, and even more dramatic, experiences than me. For example, one student from my school received admission to Harvard Universit y. This same student also had a stroke in the 2nd grade and has had physical and mental disabilities ever since. Looking at this case in isolation, people assumed that he only got admission because he was an Asian student with disabilities. But through sociological imagination, people realized that his achievements such as a 36 on the ACT, 4.0 GPA, being the editor of the school paper, a national merit scholar, and being the President of 4 different clubs is how he received admission. Because many young people in Indonesia now felt into drugs. There reasons are media, curiosity, lack of proper family guidence, and the factor of friends. The reasons were not the absolute reason. There are still many other factors, but the above factors are a common factor in today’s society. It helps us to better identify the factors above as an initial step spread of drugs prevention. The first reason of someone falling into the circle of drugs is the media factor. Along with the development of today’s technology, people become very dependent on technology such as mobile phones, television, radio, and internet. Thus the role of the media becomes very important in a person’s psychological development. People who are too often witnessed the violence in movies or the internet, believed to be more aggressive. As same as the drugs problem. Someone who often witnessed how drug users or drugs used, were also likely to fall into drugs. Therefore, the sensors could be reducing the scenes of drug use as one of the major steps in drugs prevention. Besides the media, of course, is the major causative factor is high curiosity and want to try drugs. Because someone who has seen drug users in film, television, and internet, will appear curious and wanted to try drugs. They are not know, by trying the drugs it will be difficult for them to escape from the drugs. Because the drugs is one type of substance that would cause the addiction for the wearer. Lack of proper guidance of the family can also be an important factor in causing a child got into drugs. Parents should act as educators in the family, should be a good example for children. So that children can imitate the good behavior of their parents. Based on research, a child who was raised by parents who become drug addicts, most likely the child will also become addicted to drugs later. Thus, the role of parents can be an important one of the psychological development of children. And the final factor that is not less important is the factor of friends. Often, playmates who use drugs will invite other friends to come to feel or using drugs. And usually, someone who offered his friend to use drugs will be easy to take drugs. That’s because a sense of solidarity and friendship is strong, so people are can’t reject his captives. Of course as we all know, once someone has tried to feel the drugs, it will be difficult to him to get out of the bondage of drugs. Thus by knowing the factors that cause someone to fall into the drugs, we expected to take reasonable precautions against those around us. Unfortunately, I was chosen to lead a team of sales persons in the organization. This was quite challenging for me given the short notice to deliver reports on team progress. I gathered my staff together so as to decide on the goals that we would wish to achieve as a group. I had to install so much pressure on my group members so as to ensure that most of the team tasks are completed on time. Sadly, my team did not emerge as the best-performed team despite the great efforts, and we had invested towards goal implementations and team communication. I realized that other teams had succeeded because their leaders set strategic plans and linked team members objective and mission to that of the organization. The team members in other groups had clear concepts of what was expected of them, they, therefore, focused on setting clear performance objectives Analysis As a leader, I lacked a clear development plan, I did not provide feedback for group discussions to the members, neither did I conduct a performance assessment to determine our performance progress, thus leading to poor performance. I had assumed that communicating with team members would enhance the better performance of the groups; I had ignored team performance management skills such as clear and effective goal setting (Gommez et al.,2014). Most of my team members had several expectations of me as a leader in guiding them towards achieving the organization mission and vision. My failure can be associated with lack of proper connections to the group members as I had put so much pressure on the members, thus ignoring the reactions of members towards achieving the team objectives. I, therefore, lacked directive on how to handle different situations within the group as the organization did not provide any guidance or coaching on how to manage the team I was leading. Improvement Planning I believe that the poor performance in my group was more linked to lack of proper support from my team and the organization administrative team. Being a new member in the company, I was assigned the responsibility to carry out but was not guided on how to perform it efficiently. This can be associated to lack of practical coaching skills from the administrative department.I also associate my failure to lack of support from colleagues as they lacked team work spirit; they over-relied on me to perform group tasks. As an individual, I lacked proper communication approach as I did not ask for help nor support from my directors nor my colleagues whenever I faced the challenges. I intend to improve my performance by developing proper communication skills, attending more pieces of training on performance and employee management and also by advocating for teamwork spirit among all staff working in my organization. I conquer that organizational success will only be achieved in three ways; eff ective communication, collaboration and through training and mentorship (Goetsch and Davis, 2014).
